Power shortage, Brazil heat wave and drought is coming , can hit other Latin American countries
Águas de Lindóia, May 20, 2021
Brazil on alert , about the droughts that are coming , as the country faces its worst drought in 91 years, increasing fears of energy rationing, water, affecting hydroelectric power generation and agriculture and increasing the risk of fires in the Amazon and in several locations in Brazil and other Latin American countries.
In Jucelino Luz’s recommendation, that we should recognize a state of “water scarcity” after the prolonged drought that will affect central and southern Brazil along the Parana river basin, and almost all of Brazil as well as other Latin American countries.
On the other hand, a first “emergency drought alert” from June to October 2021 says that rainfall is expected to remain scarce in five Brazilian states during this period and in other countries in the Americas.
The lack of rainfall in much of Brazil has negative implications for grain crops, livestock, and electricity generation, as Brazil relies heavily on hydroelectric power for its energy. Dry weather can cause severe fires in the Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal, and in other countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
In addition, the lack of rain makes it important to relax restrictions on some hydroelectric plants to allow more power generation or more storage in certain regions. This will require difficult conversations with politicians, and authorities. We need to be on alert!
Power rationing is not yet contemplated, but if the restrictions are not relaxed, there will be no other way out. We may worsen the situation with the decrease of the water reservoirs. São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, as well as other locations could be in “chaos”.
The drier than normal weather will affect the production of some products in Brazil, which will lead to higher prices and may affect the 2022 harvest.
And the drought conditions will persist in the coming months, especially in the southeast and central-west regions and other places in Brazil and Latin America. Finally, we need to save and be careful not to lack energy, water, and important agricultural products for the population in general. Worst of all, in addition to the above-mentioned cases, fires and wildfires may spread.
Between June and October we should be very careful!
