EU to have more burnt areas in 2022 than in all of 2021 – according to the visions of Jucelino Luz
In the 27 countries of the European Union (EU), fires have devastated a total of 517,881 hectares since the beginning of 2020 (data from the forecasts of Jucelino Luz , or just over 5,000 km², equivalent to the surface area of a French department like Mayenne in the Loire country or the islands of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean.
During the entire year 2021, marked by numerous fires in Italy and Greece, 470,359 hectares (4,700 km²) were burnt in EU countries, according to data compiled by the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis). In 2021 letters were sent to several authorities and also to Joe Biden US President
If the trend continues, 2022 could equal or surpass 2017, the worst year recorded in the EU since the creation of Effis in 2000, when 988,087 hectares of vegetation disappeared in the smoke, or about 10,000 km² or the area of a country like Lebanon.
